¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
Why learn another language? |
Who can learn another language? |
Learning another language has benefits beyond the classroom! Knowledge of other languages improves cognitive skills, memory and one's attention span. As one learns another language, knowledge of the English language is sharpened, as the language class has roots in universal grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Let's not forget about communication! Learning another language improves communication skills (speaking and writing), and allows you to communicate better in both the language studied and English. Culture is also key! Language class would be incomplete without learning about the culture of the people who speak it. Foreign language learners become culturally aware and understanding of other people in our world.
The Goals of Our Language ClassDiscover another language and culture. By learning in this class, find a part of the language and culture that interests and inspires you. Respect other cultures and let the knowledge of other cultures guide you to know more about yours. Find what language and culture mean to you!
|
Anyone! There is no requirement to learn another language. You do not have to have family who speaks another language (although that is very nice!), nor do you have to be the heritage of the language you are taking.
All you need is an open mind, patience, and willingness to learn. It may be "foreign" to you at first, but you can do it! Improving your language skills...Be exposed to the language as much as you can! This can be done by listening to music or the radio in the language, watching TV or movies in the language, or reading the newspaper in the language. Use the Internet to find videos, articles, songs, recipes and other parts of the language and culture. Make the language a part of your world and your skills will be improved! Click on your class webpage above and you will find helpful links to get you started. Your class webpage will also include useful links and class handouts that you can access anywhere.

Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.❞

Class Expectations and Policies
Participation: ALL students are expected to participate in class activities and discussions. The only way to improve language skills is to speak and listen, plus our class would be a snooze without your participation. Respect for one another, effort, and a positive attitude are just as important to me as your grades are. Engaging in meaningful conversations and activities with one another (both in the language and in English) will help you become a better student and person.
Availability: Should you have any concerns or ideas feel free to see me in person on my free periods or via email. I am always available for my students! Late/Absent Policy: All homework will receive full credit if it is submitted on the day and period that it is due. Any homework completed after its original due date will not be accepted. Lateness of compositions or projects will be penalized by the deduction of 5 points for each day late and will not be accepted after 3 days past its due date. If you know that you are going to miss a test, quiz, composition or project due date, please speak with me, so that we can arrange for another due date. |
Academic Honesty: In my class, cheating is not tolerated. I expect that each student does his or her own work and does not plagiarize another student's work or work from any other source. For example, using Google Translate to write entire sentences, most of or all of a composition will result in an automatic zero. It is very easy for me to tell the difference between original student work and translator-generated work.
As per the World Languages Department the grading policy per marking period is as follows for all language levels: Tests (40%) Quizzes (20%) Class Participation (10%) Homework (10%) Projects and Compositions (20%) Please be aware that improper use of an online translator will result in an automatic zero for that assignment. |
